The priceless archaeological treasure that surfaced following in Ierapetra, Crete after the storm
A marble sculpture of an ancient Roman noblewoman with a stunning hairstyle was found on 4 January by a young farmer, who handed it immediately to the Archaeological Service according to neakriti.gr.
By the first estimates of the archaeologist curator of Lasithiou Prefecture Chrysa Sophianou, the sculpture depicts a Roman lady of around 3rd AD, it is incredibly beautiful and has great artistic value and might have decorated a mansion or a Roman tomb of that period.
"This is the head of a female statue exhibiting very good art, well maintained, with a complicated headdress which allows us to date them at first glance around the 3rd century AD. Ierapetra has never been anything like it and along with other findings of the 1st and 2nd century AD will be transported to our laboratories in Agios Nikolaos to be cleaned, maintained and returned to be exposed in the Archaeological Collection of Ierapetra. When cleaned and maintained we will study it and then we can say with greater accuracy more . It seems, however, that is a very interesting and unique piece, " Chrysa Sophianou added.
Various fabulous art treasures from Ierapetra have been stolen and sold in the black market and currently adorn private collections, foreign palaces and foreign museums while the local Archaeological Museum comprises of two humble rooms in comparison. The Ierapetra municipality along with the Archaeological Antiquities Promotion Committe headed by retired teacher John Rovithakis are in lookout for space and funding for the creation of a large, modern and mainly secure Archaeological Museum, to exhibit all the treasures of ancient Ierapetra, making the city an even more popular cultural destination.
